OSPAPIK Research Seminar – « Time For A Western Cosmological Turn? An Astrophysicist’s Point Of View »
mardi 8 avril 2025
En ligne, 03:00 PM — 05:00 PM
In western culture, cosmology is the name of a branch of physical sciences and the cosmologists are the physicists in charge of studying the universe. In the context of anthropology the word cosmology refers to the representation of the world or the universe of a given people, and together with ontology it defines a culture. Western culture is often called to take a turn in order for its members to change their way of being in the world and stop the global destructions. How could this happen if both cosmology and ontology are believed to be fully determined by nature itself through the univocal interpretation performed by natural sciences? In this talk I will show that, in fact, the narrative that is given by physicists does not exactly fit to their observations and results. Realizing this gap, which can be considered as the result of scientism, may help release the deep blockages that prevent change. The hegemony of western culture could appear even more clearly outdated to its own members and metaphysics could be reopened to the plurality of approaches and narratives.
